Writings by Britt

Here find links to various articles, sermons, essays, etc., that I’ve written over the years. Some of them are interesting!

  • In 2010 our congregation decided to celebrate communion every week. Here’s a reflection that discusses the question whether frequent celebration of the sacrament renders it “less sacred.”
  • In 2009 I presented a paper at the Colloquium on Violence and Religion on “Resurrection As Atonement.” The idea is that the resurrection of Christ is more important for our reconciliation to God than his death was. Here’s the link.
  • 2009 Christmas Reflection.
  • Here’s a poem I wrote recently about piercings, envy, and spiritual liberation in Christ. (Please forgive the formatting).
  • In 1996, I worked with several Presbyterians to try to stop the amendment to the Book of Order that would prohibit ordination of people who don’t hide if they have sex outside of marriage. At the time, it was called “Amendment B.”  Here’s the link to it: Fidelity and Chastity Amendment Educational Packet
  • In 2005, the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA) received a report on the “Peace, Unity, and Purity” of the Presbyterian Church. I wrote a reflection on how to resolve the crisis over sexual ethics and theology.
  • “A new look at the mission imperative”, Network News Fall, 2006. The newsletter of the Witherspoon Society. http://www.witherspoonsociety.org/NN%20Fall%202006.pdf
  • “Jesus, the Ultimate ‘Lethal Weapon’: A ‘Girardian’ Reflection on Gibson’s ‘The Passion of the Christ’. 2005. In “Passionate Dialogues: Critical Perspectives on Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ.” Pittsburgh. Mise Publications.
  • October, 2004.  “How Girard’s Mimetic Theory Can Help Us Understand the Relationship Between Science and Religion.”  In the online journal Metanexus(Reprinted 2004 in Santa Fe Theologians, an occasional newsletter, and again in 2005 SciTech: The Newsletter of Presbyterian Association on Science, Technology, and the Christian Faith.)
  • Repenting of Retributionism” article in Contagion: Journal of Violence, Mimesis, and Culture. Volume 8, Spring 2001.
  • Temples of Debt: Capitalism as a Sacred/Sacrificial System” Paper presented to the annual meeting of the Colloquium on Violence and Religion, June, 2001 in Antwerp, Belgium.
  • My 9/11 Sermon, in which I predicted some of the troubles we’ve had since then.
